  1. ENERGY SAVER

  3. Apple Computer plans to make energy efficiency a standard feature of all computers and peripheral devices. We believe that energy efficient products help customers make a positive environmental contribution and also reduce their energy costs.

  5. Apple has been a supporter of the Energy Star program from the very beginning as a charter participant and has already translated its commitment into real products.

  8. WHAT IS ENERGY SAVER?
  9.  
  10. Energy Saver is a control panel that gives you the option of setting your monitor to go into low power mode after your computer has been idle for a specified time up to one hour. This control panel will function only on Macintosh Quadra, Centris, or LC III computers, and requires System 7.1.

Energy Saver will function only with Apple Energy Star–compliant monitors using the built-in video support. To find out if your monitor is Apple Energy Star compliant, check the label on the box that your monitor came in for the "EPA Energy Star" logo, or ask your service provider. Monitors that do not support this energy saver function, or monitors that use video cards will not be harmed by the installation of this control panel, but they will not save energy with Energy Saver installed.

  15. HOW TO INSTALL ENERGY SAVER

  17. Be sure that you have System 7.1 installed on your computer, and at least 2 megabytes of memory available. To install Energy Saver on a compatible computer, follow these steps:

  19. 1.    Insert the Monitor Energy Saver 1.0 disk into your computer's floppy disk drive. A window will automatically open on your desktop.

  21. 2.    Double-click the Installer icon.

  23. 3.  Read the Welcome screen and click OK.  The following dialog box will appear:

  48. 4.    Click Install.  If your particular Macintosh cannot use this control panel, you will not be able to use the Install button to install Energy Saver.

  50.  (Note:  The Customize option allows you to install Energy Saver on computers that cannot use this control panel.  This means that Energy Saver will not work on these machines, nor will it affect their performance, and you will not be reducing your monitor's power consumption by having this control panel installed.)

  52. 5.    When you see a message that installation is complete, click the Restart button.

  54. 6.  When your computer is back on, set your Energy Saver preferences in the control panel window (see "How to Set Energy Saver" below).

  57. HOW TO SET ENERGY SAVER

  59. From the Apple Menu, select Control Panels.  Double click the Energy Saver control panel to open it.  The following control panel window will appear:

Drag the slider bar to adjust the monitor inactivity period, from 15 to 60 minutes.  Turn Energy Saver on by clicking the box nearest the slider bar (an "x" will appear to indicate that Energy Saver is "on.") Your settings will take effect immediately; you will not need to restart your machine.

  75. To turn Energy Saver off, click the box nearest the slider bar in the Energy Saver control panel so that the "x" disappears.

  78. WHAT ENERGY SAVER DOES
  79.  
  80. Energy Saver darkens your monitor while it is inactive and reduces the monitor's power consumption level.

When your Apple Energy Star–compliant monitor has been inactive (that is, you have not used the mouse or keyboard) for the time specified in the Energy Saver control panel, the screen of your monitor will go black.  This indicates that your monitor is in low power mode, and is saving energy.  Your computer is still functioning.

  84. The monitor will return to fully active state approximately 20 seconds after you use the keyboard or mouse.  You will hear a number of beeps while the screen is updated to reflect its current state.  (Note:  The beep volume cannot be adjusted; it is independent of all system sound controls.)

Important:  Monitors that are not Apple Energy Star compliant will be unable to utilize the energy saving features of the Energy Saver control panel. If Energy Saver is installed on a computer that has a noncompatible monitor, the monitor will go black after the specified inactivity period has passed, but the noncompatible monitor will NOT be in low power mode, and therefore will NOT be saving energy.
